Todd & Lori wanted to design a farmhouse what would fit perfectly on their newly acquired property.
Project details
This secluded country estate was formed with two ambitions: on the exterior, to create spaces for enjoying the outdoors on a very steep site; on the interior, to make a just-right-sized, flexible space for a couple enjoying retirement and their family and friends.
The house, perched on a hillside, forms a central courtyard against the hill, which is the heart of the project. Large bifold doors link the front porch and courtyard—through the house—with the private back deck which looks out into the woods. During a summer party, people can move from outdoors to indoors and back again.
Inside, a double-sided fireplace partially divides a generous kitchen and living room. Opportunities for private contemplation and the laughter and joy of family and friends are interwoven throughout the interior, facilitated by the easy flow of spaces from one to another.
